Evil Scientist frequently accuses me of playing dirty during arguments. In a conversation with a group of co-workers several weeks ago I was accused of the same thing when I was listening to a story about an argument and I mentioned how I would have handled it. I've been thinking about it ever since.

In case you're wondering, I've been sick at home the last few days with a nasty stomach bug. That's why I've had time to read, watch TV and catch up on my blogging. Anyway, in between trips to the washroom I've been reading a book about depression.

The Philosophy of House

I usually don't get into new TV series. Shift work makes it difficult to keep up with one's TV schedule. When I get hooked on a show it's usually syndicated on one of the speciality channels and then I pick up a bunch of seasons on DVD. House MD was the exception. Because Hugh Laurie was the star, I made an effort to watch the pilot and have been hooked ever since.

Like most people who choose to live in the real world and not look on “the bright side of things” I often get called a pessimist. I prefer the term realist. In case you're interested, realists also get called bitter, cynical and jaded.

Well, let's hope 2009 isn't any worse than 2008. I'm not really optimistic enough to hope that it will be any better.

I've been in a black mood of late. It is the usual gloom of the season. I don't get this warm, hurray-for-the-year-ahead feeling. It's more like a feeling of dark foreboding. Also, there's a seasonal aspect. Food has been plentiful and bad. Sun light and exercise have been rare.

Before anyone calls me on the horribleness of that title, please be aware that the sport of triathlon never gets tired of using the word “tri” in puns.

I recently read the novel Revolutionary Road. It is about to be released as a film and I have a small obsession about reading a book before I see a “based on” flick. For those of you who know me the reason I want to see this film should be painfully obvious.

I can safely say after two weeks in the mountains that I've left the ranks of novice skier. My father no longer has to be ashamed that his only child can't ski. He can still yell at me going down the mountain but he'll have to catch me first (is it working Dad, are you going to come out and prove me wrong?). In fact, I even attempted some black diamond runs yesterday and did not too badly.
