“Tri”-ing Year Ahead

Sporty Spice Before anyone calls me on the horribleness of that title, please be aware that the sport of triathlon never gets tired of using the word “tri” in puns. I’d been kicking around the idea of competing in a triathlon for awhile. It seemed to me that nothing could announce my arrival as a “sport and fitness” buff, (transformed from fat, band-geek, no less), better than competing in a tri.

So, this summer, I picked up a book for beginners and started working on a program. It fizzled out in the fall when I realized that there was no where I was going to be able to compete anytime soon. I managed to keep up some running and now that the holidays are dragging to a close, it’s time to turn sights on the upcoming year.

If you’re like I was before I’d read my first book on the subject; you’re thinking I’m nuts because the only version of the triathlon you have ever heard of is the Ironman competition.

Thankfully (because I’m not sure I want to do any one of those activities for that long yet, let alone three in a row) there are many tri options. I will be giving it my best shot this summer competing in what is called a Sprint Tri. This consists of 750 m of swimming, 20 km of cycling and 5 km of running. My goal is to do at least one of these this year. There’s a “Try It” Tri at the end of May at the U of C that I’ve got my eye on. It is, in fact, slightly shorter than even a Sprint.

If that goes well, I’ve got my eye on a Sprint in Canmore as well as one in my home town. We’ll see how it goes, I will also be doing the MS Bike Tour from Calgary to Olds.

Goals like this are keeping me focused on losing my last 40 lbs. I can’t get excited about getting up and going to the gym but it’s darn exciting to think “yippie, I’m hitting the slopes tomorrow”. It’s also thrilling to see how running rapidly changes my body and dreaming about looking super-cool with my race numbers painted on my (with a lot of hard work) taunt muscles.

I’m also thinking of developing my own sport. Downhill Biathlon. I don’t want to give too much away but it will include automatic weapons and snowboarders.

Ahh, the guilt inspired hopes of the new year after three days of binge eating.
