After the last few weeks of thinking that baby was never going to get here, I'm having a hard time believing that I'm not pregnant anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's great to be able to sleep any way I want and I enjoy having an empty bladder again.
However, with Simon out and into the world, I no longer have any excuses so in regards to fitness, weight-loss and health it's time to get back on track. I'll be posting my progress to keep me honest and motivated.

Reasons I'll Probably Never Be a Climber

On Sunday, I read Jon Krakauer's memoir of the 1996 Everest disaster, 'Into Thin Air'. It likely won't be the last Everest book I read but it's odd that it wasn't the first. I actually started with Michael Kodas' 'High Crimes' after reading a review of it in the Rocky Mountain Outlook while skiing in Banff. Previous to this winter, I didn't have the foggiest clue about any of the controversy and mystique that surrounded Everest.
I'm glad that 'Into Thin Air' was not the first book I read on the subject. I think that I was able to read Krakauer's tale with much more sympathy than I would have had it been my first foray into the literature on the subject. I found his writing honest yet beautiful in some ways. His distress at the situation was very genuine to me and I felt for his inability to put what had happened out of his mind.

Evidently, “because it’s there” just doesn’t cut it anymore. I suppose I’m a bit behind the curve on this one given the immense amount of literature on the subject of Everest, especially in the last 10 to 15 years, but I’d never really thought much about the famous peak before.

I've been in a black mood of late. It is the usual gloom of the season. I don't get this warm, hurray-for-the-year-ahead feeling. It's more like a feeling of dark foreboding. Also, there's a seasonal aspect. Food has been plentiful and bad. Sun light and exercise have been rare.

Before anyone calls me on the horribleness of that title, please be aware that the sport of triathlon never gets tired of using the word “tri” in puns.

I named this section of my blog “Sporty Spice” after being dubbed so by a co-worker one night when I rode my bike to work.

Please note:
In spite of the size of my ass, it is not neccesary for you to pull into the opposing lane and fire me a pissy look as you pass me on my bike. I am travelling well-over to the right hand curb.
If you have a problem with that you know what you can go home and do to yourselves...

Not that it matters because I never did get out to Sunshine for May skiing but it's sad all the same that I'm not getting ski reports on my Blackberry every day. I do realize, of course, that summer will be all too short and I won't have to wait long to be bombing down the slopes. I'm already putting in some OT to pay for my RCR Superpass.

I’m not sure that anyone lives in this world without addiction. I think the key is finding an addiction that suits your life rather than damages it.
