“There's a dark and a troubled side of life
There's a bright and a sunny side, too
Tho' we meet with the darkness and strife
The sunny side we also may view”
Keep on the Sunny Side

Remember when I analysed the lyrics to Falling Down Blue several months ago and said that the next song I analysed would be happy? I lied. Lucy Roche Wainwright commented at a workshop that her mother once asked her if she could possibly write a happy song. Lucy complied but said that she always feels a bit weird singing it. I kind of feel the same way about analysing happy songs.

Summer is the time for folk and as usual, the quest for hot afternoons spent lounging in lush grass while listening to great performances did not disappoint.

Lyrics - Falling Down Blue

When a person is in music school, there are endless hours spent analyzing music. I don’t know if that’s the reason why lyrics are important to me or not but what a song is saying is always an important component to my enjoyment of a particular tune.
It’s no secret that I’m one of “those” Blue Rodeo fans but I’m certainly not alone. Jim Cuddy has the amazing talent of being able to tell stories through song and it’s one of the reasons that his ballads are so popular. So here’s my personal analysis of the lyrics to Falling Down Blue (see, music school wasn’t a total waste). Oh, and I promise next time to pick a happier song. I've had this one stuck in my head for days and I thought that blogging about it may get it unstuck.
