It's snowing out and that's just the beginning of the reasons I didn't want to go swimming tonight:

I finished bathing the baby and then changed into the The Ugliest Bathing Suit In The World. Looking at myself in the mirror didn't make me want to swim, it made me want to cry. The problem is, not going swimming would not have changed the situation in the mirror at all. I gave the baby his night time bottle, wearing The Suit as a reminder of why I had to go. Every step I took to get out of the house tonight seemed painful but I finally braved the cold rain and headed to the pool. At the pool, I managed 200 m in ten minutes. Not great, I'd like to get to the 350 m point in ten minutes. Still, it could be worse and I swam without stopping. Once I get my speed going, I'll have the other challenges of swimming in open water, wearing a wet suit. I was exhausted by the time I got home but glad that I'd gone. I didn't want to have to log on to my blog and admit that I'd crapped out which is exactly why I'm keeping this log in the first place (not because I think it's a riveting read).

Today I also went grocery shopping. I tried to get enough for the next couple of weeks. As much as I like shopping for a meal each day , I have a paper due at the end of the month so I need Junior's nap time in the morning and afternoon to make some headway. I followed the healthy eating directive that suggests sticking to the edge of the supermarket.

Our house is no stranger to picky eaters, ES won't eat salmon, poultry, eggs, cauliflower, bananas and mushrooms. I hate red and green peppers, which these days make life a bit difficult, all the more reason to cook my own food. I'm also a bit squirrelly about things like chunky soup and lasangna if I haven't prepared it. I need to know what's in mixed foods or I have a hard time eating it (yeah, yeah, yet another thing to add to my giant list of neurosis). I used to also hate onions but lately I can't seem to get enough of them. Raw on hot dogs, sautéed for burgers, deep fried into rings, chopped into salads; I don't seem to mind any variety prepared in any way.

Since we're both trying to lose weight, fish is my best bet for meat because of the no chicken thing. Tonight I seared tuna that had just been flavoured with salt and pepper. I added that to a spinach salad with purple onion, pears, Grand Marnier soaked raisins and a home made strawberry vinaigrette. I included some diner rolls and white wine and had a tasty meal that didn't take to long to prepare. I'm so jazzed about this cooking thing. I can't believe how much I'm enjoying it.
